Plan for Picnics

Breaking the monotony to stir in some excitement and fun can transform the very ambience of your home. The mention of heading out for a picnic can quite electrify the atmosphere, that can send your family into a frenzy. There would be a rapture on previously bored faces, trickles of laughter, frivolous banter, eager suggestions of various picnic spots and enthusiastic involvement to contribute in every manner by individual family members. So get set and go!

Get past the first hurdle

To begin with, you need to select a picnic spot that suits all age groups travelling with you. The journey should be comfortable and not too long. There should be plenty of shade to prevent sun strokes and dehydration. Also if elders are accompanying, the landscape should not be topsy-turvy or steep to make them go out of breath or stumble. Similarly, it should be safe for the children too. A beautiful botanical garden, a shimmering lakeside camping site, a refreshing waterfall, an ancient historical site that hoards secrets of the past, a palace that holds volumes of history, a wildlife sanctuary, to catch a glimpse of majestic creatures, or a fort with light and sound shows can be some of the few attractions that beckon you for a change of scene.

Be well equipped

Pull out your favourite shorts, slacks, hat, glares, cool water bottles like the thermo pro flasks and bottles, portable rechargeable lantern, portable barbecue, a pair of scissors, picnic cooler to keep beverages cool like fruit juices, iced tea, sodas, etc to beat the heat. Take along USB portable speakers to get the mood going at any location.

Disposable cutlery, plates, enough garbage bags, napkins, wet wipes, condiments like salt and pepper, picnic blanket for a royal spread of feast, pop up tents for shade, umbrellas for the romantic kind, hand sanitizers, portable and foldable picnic chairs and tables, mosquito repellents like citronella candles, a small first aid kit with plasters, antiseptic cream for inevitable bruises and scrapes. Medicines for upset stomach, squeezy stomach, painkillers, etc should be kept handy.

Amusement for children

Get a football, frisbee, card games, taboo etc to keep them amused and engaged. Dumb charades, antakshari, etc will get all age groups involved in memorable times.

Energizing Drive

The journey should set the tone for the destination. A good collection of music, plenty of water and refreshing beverages with energizing snacks like granola bars, favourite chocolates with a nutty crunch, should keep the momentum going till you reach your destination.

Food for rumbling tummies

Cold sandwiches, tangy fruit chaat, spicy bhelpuri, roasted corn on the cob or flavoured and spiced up tender corn kernels, interesting dips like hummus with cold salads, air fried samosas, aloo tikkis to serve with ragda, vada pav, momos, dhoklas, etc make fulfilling snacks.

For crunchy satisfaction

Popcorn, banana pepper wafers, potato chips, chakri, freshly baked cookies, masala peanuts, etc, make excellent snacks for crunchy cravings.

Pack up after the royal feast

After the satiable feast, it becomes necessary to leave the scenic spot as clean as you had found it, if not go a step further and leave it cleaner than before. This inculcates the value of responsible citizenship to leave nature as serene and pristine as possible.

Quintessential picnic feeling

Impromptu or planned picnics bring the family closer as the sense of belonging together gets reinforced. Sharing responsibility, contributing and enduring together makes a better human being out of ourselves for better relationships. It is a learning process for elders and youngsters alike. Elders pave way for better understanding of the current generation and youngsters imbibe values from elders. There is a joy which increases manyfold when everyone for a change stops thinking only about themselves and starts caring for each other. The soothing outing makes everyone cheerfully consenting to partake every activity.
