Bhog for Skandamata

Bananas are offered to this Devi with the chanting of mantras, which is then distributed to Brahmins. Fruits, sweets, flowers, rice, and water are offered during her worship. Red-colored flowers are her favorite and red roses could be apt for her pooja.

The Legend has it -

  • Skandamata is seen holding Lord Kartikeya in her right arm and those who worship this Devi, get the benefit of worshipping Lord Kartikeya too.
  • She blesses her devotees with the “Abhaya Mudra” gesture which signifies fearlessness, peace, and safety. Abhaya refers to - fearlessness.
  • She is also known as Goddess Padmasana as she sits on a lotus flower.
  • Skandamata is radiant with “Shubhra” complexion being white complexion. The color grey is significant to this day, as it symbolizes the vulnerability of a mother for the safety of her child, as she can transform into a thunderstorm when the need arises.
  • Her blessings offer to enhance your intelligence as she rules the planet Jupiter(Budha).

How did Lord Kartikeya come into being?

Being grappled with fear and dismay because of the war waged on the Gods(devas) by the demons (asuras) being led by Surapadman and Tarakasura, they approached Lord Vishnu for help. Only the offspring of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati could put an end to the havoc. After undergoing severe penance, Devi Chandraghanta is married to Lord Shiva. The fiery seed emerging from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati’s energy needed nurturing. The heat from the seed was unbearable for Lord Agni to carry, so was given to Ganga to carry it to the Saravana Lake.

Goddess Parvati takes the form of the water body to nurture the fiery seed of Kartikeya, who is born with the choicest of blessings from Gods. He grows up to be a handsome, intelligent and powerful youth to lead the army as commander-in-chief to defeat the asuras. Ma Skandamata is thus worshipped as the mother of a supremely gifted child - Kartikeya.

So, what are your thoughts? Who do you see as an Incarnation and real-life #ModernAvatar of Goddess Skandamata?

We believe that we could, literally & figuratively, contemplate her existence in our lives. Any guesses? Yes. You're accurate. She's your mother. There are many ways through which the journey of life ends but only one-way to begin - the womb of a mother.

"Live your life listening to your heart, attuned to it, awake to it, aware of it."

Like the goddess herself, today's generation intimates a conflux of Iccha Shakti [power of intention], Jnana Shakti [power of knowledge] and Kriya Shakti [power of righteous action].

To adduce a close acquaintance and real-life #ModernAvatar of Goddess Skandamata could be the great Mother Teresa who devoted her life for the betterment of destitute & deprived people of Kolkata and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She also opened her first home for the dying and the first mobile leprosy clinic in 1957.

A heart of Gem, A face of Grace, And A mind of Gentle - such are the traits of a mother, always prepared to offer everything she had in her purse.

So, take a moment from your busy schedule. Think about her as we fail to appreciate and acknowledge the aggregate affection and immense love & support provided by her.
